AEMO releases final report into SA blackout, blames wind farm settings for state-wide power failure

Overly sensitive protection mechanisms in some South Australian wind farms are to blame for the catastrophic statewide blackout in September last year, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) says.

In its fourth and final report into the September 29 blackout, AEMO said it was the action of a control setting responding to multiple disturbances that led to the 'black system'.

The report said the unexpected operation of the control settings resulted in the sudden loss of generation from the wind farms.

Key Points

  • AEMO has released its fourth and final report into SA's September blackout
  • It said overly sensitive settings in some wind farms resulted in the statewide blackout
  • But it also found the intermittent nature of wind was not to blame
  • In its fourth and final report into the September 29 blackout, AEMO said it was the action of a control setting responding to multiple disturbances that led to the 'black system'.

This is a travesty of reporting is ever I saw one.

This is the list of events in the report in chronological order, note original report available here

  • Storm
  • 6 network faults in quick succession
  • Tripping of multiple wind farms
  • Overload of Haywood interconnector
  • Islanding
  • Black System
  • Would someone please explain to me why everyone seems to ignore the 6 network faults and skip on to blaming renewables, even though they came in to play at step 7 and did so to protect themselves ?

Analogy: I throw a rock at a passing car which shattered the cars windscreen and caused it to run onto the footpath where it his a pedestrian who then died.

What cased the death, me throwing the rock ? Or the car running down the pedestrian ?

If you are struggling with the answer, who do you think will go to jail ?

Answer: Me, because I caused it to happen. The car did the actual killing, but the driver was only responding to something beyond their control, so you could hardly blame them.

Renewables did NOT cause the blackout in SA

Update: AEMO to blame for load shedding during SA heatwave, Australian Energy Regulator finds
